π About Oscoda Township
Oscoda is an unincorporated community in Iosco County, Michigan, situated on the northern shore of the Au Sable River where it empties into Lake Huron. The community of AuSable sits directly across the river to the south.
Michigan has designated Oscoda as the official home of Paul Bunyan, based on the earliest documented publications in the Oscoda Press in 1906.
Oscoda was home to Wurtsmith Air Force Base, which closed in 1993 under the Base Realignment and Closure Commission. Much of the former base has been repurposed for commercial and community use, including the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport with its large runway β a legacy asset for economic development.
Known as the "Center of the Universe" for its accessibility by land (US-23, M-65), sea (Lake Huron shipping lanes), and air (Wurtsmith runway), Oscoda today hosts over 260 businesses including restaurants, galleries, shops, and outdoor recreation outfitters.
The Au Sable River β designated a National Wild and Scenic River β draws canoeists, kayakers, and anglers from across the country, while Lake Huron provides miles of public beach, fishing piers, and sunset views that define life on the Sunrise Side.
